Acting For Improvisers
Acting for Improvisers is for anyone interested in deepening their stage presence through emotional, physical, and vocal availability. The philosophy of this class lies in creating opportunities to be seen and heard by others. This practice of openness and availability will, over the course of six sessions, allow us to encounter ourselves, the people behind the performers. Physical and vocal exercises will help us to identify personal and performance boundaries. We will reflect on these as individuals, as well as in group settings, allowing us to better understand our boundaries and move through them. The curricular blueprint of this class lies mostly in acting fundamentals (diaphragmatic breath, neutral bodies, grounded/resonant voices, connection with scene partners), but also takes inspiration from the world of clown, where like in improv, the relationship to the audience is paramount. We will end our journey together getting a small taste of scripted texts and characters.
Joy is a Venezuelan-Canadian actor, theatre creator, and facilitator. She has over 10 years of experience using theatre as a tool to empower children and adults, including co-creating and directing Imago Theatre’s Artista program, a free theatre mentorship program for young women and gender-diverse people (2014-2019). Her creations are inspired by her mixed heritage, and explore how identity is shaped by political upheaval.
